The Waipio Valley Lookout is completely free and offers one of the most dramatic views in all of Hawaii, with a 2,000-foot valley, black sand beach, and waterfalls visible from the parking area. No hiking is required at all, making this perfect for families with toddlers and strollers since the viewpoint is right at the road. Do not attempt to drive or hike down into the valley with young children as the road descends at a 25 percent grade and the valley floor can flood suddenly. The drive from Waimea takes about 20 minutes and pairs well with a stop at the nearby town of Honokaa for lunch. Visit in the morning for the best light and clearest views of the waterfalls.
