Admission to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo is free though parking is paid (around $30 per vehicle) so Metro is strongly recommended — take the Red Line to Woodley Park or Cleveland Park station and walk about 5 minutes downhill. Open daily 8am to 6pm (grounds) with animal houses closing at 5pm; check the website for seasonal changes. The zoo is hilly so a stroller with good wheels is essential and parents should prepare for uphill return trips. Giant pandas are the headliner attraction and the Asia Trail section is a favorite for young kids. Bring snacks and water as the food stalls are priced high and lines get long on weekends.
