One of Nashville’s best free outdoor wins — a 10-mile paved and unpaved greenway system running along the Cumberland River in East Nashville with wide flat paths perfect for bikes, scooters, and strollers. The nature center has free exhibits on local wildlife and is open limited hours (typically Wednesday through Saturday); call ahead if that is a priority. Restrooms are available at the Davidson Street trailhead and near the nature center; bring water as there are no vendors on the trail. Shade is decent along the river corridor but open meadow sections get hot in summer, so go before 10am in July and August. Dogs are welcome on leash which makes this a crowd-pleaser even for kids who are reluctant hikers — the river views and open space keep them moving.
