Scratch Patch is one of Cape Town’s quirkiest and most beloved kids experiences: a massive floor covered in millions of polished gemstones that children sift through and fill a bag to keep. Bags are priced from approximately R45 for a small pouch to R160 for a large bag (roughly USD $2.50 to $9), making this one of the most affordable special activities in the city. Kids aged 3-10 tend to go absolutely wild here and it is genuinely captivating for 30-45 minutes. The indoor setting makes it a great foul-weather backup and it is stroller-accessible, though keep toddlers from putting stones in their mouths. There is a sister location in Simon’s Town near Boulders Beach, convenient if combining both in a day trip.
