Nishiki Market is a narrow 400-meter covered arcade open roughly 9am-6pm daily; arrive by 10am on weekdays for the best experience. Food stalls sell skewers, tamagoyaki, and fresh mochi for 100-400 JPY (~$0.70-$2.75) each — a great low-cost way to graze with kids. Strollers are extremely difficult to maneuver in the narrow lanes; use a front carrier instead. Skip the pickled fish stalls at the western end if you have picky eaters, but do not miss the fresh tofu and hot dango stalls near the center. Restrooms are sparse so use facilities before entering.
