Walking the top of Cartagena’s 400-year-old colonial walls is one of the most iconic and completely free experiences in the city, with sweeping views of the Caribbean Sea on one side and the colorful old town on the other. The most accessible starting point is the Torre del Reloj (Clock Tower Gate) which opens into the Plaza de los Coches. The wall path is wide and mostly flat for older kids but uneven stone surfaces and lack of railings in some sections make it less suitable for toddlers and stroller users. The best time to walk is late afternoon after 4pm when temperatures drop and the light is golden; early morning before 9am is another good option to beat cruise ship crowds. Surrounding streets have colorful balconies, street performers, and fruit vendors selling fresh mango with chili — budget 1 to 2 hours for the walk plus exploring Plaza de la Aduana.
