Every Sunday the entire length of Defensa Street transforms into an open-air market stretching over 10 blocks, packed with street performers, tango dancers, artisan vendors, and food stalls — the single most visually exciting free experience in Buenos Aires for kids. Entry is completely free and street food (empanadas, churros, fresh-squeezed citrus) costs 500-1,500 ARS per item (under $2 USD each). Arrive by 10am before crowds become stroller-unfriendly; by noon the street is shoulder-to-shoulder and navigation with a pram is genuinely difficult. Kids aged 6 and up tend to love watching the live tango and street magic performances at the Dorrego plaza end of the market. Keep a close hand on children in the busiest sections and use crossbody bags rather than backpacks.
