Admission is $5 per person or $10 per vehicle. The crater trail is about 1.6 miles round trip with steep switchbacks and a narrow tunnel near the summit. Reservations are required in advance through the Hawaii DLNR website, so book before you arrive. Skip the summit attempt with kids under 6 as the final stairs are very steep and exposed. Go early morning before 8am to beat the heat and the crowds.
