The saltwater swimming lagoon is completely free – a lifeguard-patrolled alternative to swimming in the Coral Sea which has stingers. Adjacent playgrounds, BBQ areas, and a skate park are also free and well-maintained. The esplanade boardwalk extends for several kilometres and is shaded in places – great for an early morning or late afternoon pram walk. Sunscreen is non-negotiable; the tropical UV rating is extreme for most of the year.
