The lodge’s self-guided trail network offers some of the closest legal access to Arenal Volcano; the day-use fee is roughly $15 USD per adult with kids often free or discounted. The Smithsonian Trail is the most family-friendly option with good volcano views and manageable elevation. Trails are not stroller-friendly due to roots and uneven lava rock terrain; bring a child carrier for little ones. Binoculars are a great addition as bird and monkey sightings are frequent. Cloud cover can obscure the volcano entirely in the afternoon, so morning visits give the best chance of clear views.
